Why Our Clients Love Dry Needling

Dry Needling is Not Acupuncture

While the practice looks similar from the outside, the foundation of Dry Needling is very different from Acupuncture. Where Acupuncture comes from a Eastern/Traditional Chinese Medicine background, Dry Needling is a more western practice and based on neuromuscular principles. Dry Needling was discovered as an effective practice in the 40's but really came into it's own from the 70's. It's now a widely recognized method for pain reduction due to muscle injury.

What Happens in a Dry Needling Treatment?

Dry Needling involves inserting a fine needle into the muscle tissue, normally aiming for a tight spot, area of irritated muscle or a trigger-point. A trigger point is what you'd commonly call a 'knot' or tight/lumpy bit of muscle that is tender to the touch. Often when the needle reaches the trigger point, there can be a deep, achy sensation and even a twitch in the muscle. The needle will stay in for anywhere from 2-10 minutes depending on the treatment, either static or with stimulation, slight movement to the needle. The needle is then removed.

How Does it Work?

The trigger-point mentioned above is essentially a chronic spasm that the nervous system hasn't registered. When the needle is inserted into a trigger point, the stimulation causes input to the muscle and the nervous system that there is a spasm in the muscle that needs to be released, and this new stimulus results in relaxation of this spasm.

Decrease Pain

Dry Needling can help to reduce pain for both acute injury and people with chronic pain. Because the dry needling process works to put new input to the nervous system, and relax trigger points, this leads to a more relaxed resting tone and a decrease in sensitisation. This all works towards decreasing pain.

Am I Suited to Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a safe, low risk treatment that can be effective across a lot of populations and conditions. However, as this treatment involves a very small break in the skin, we don't advise this if you have immune conditions or blood clotting disorders. Dry Needling can be safe during pregnancy from the 2nd trimester, however if you've not had needling prior to pregnancy, we don't recommend until after birth for caution.
