The Benefits of Myofascial Release Massage
Firstly - what is fascia?
Fascia is a strong, connective tissue that is a web-like structure in our body, wrapping around and connecting everything from cells, to muscle bodies, to everything in between. When healthy, fascia is well hydrated, well lubricated and moves freely like a strong elastic. However, due to injuries or other factors, fascia can become stiff, sticky and start to impede our ability to move freely.
What's the difference between myofascial release and massage?
Myofascial release is a skin to skin massage with no oils or balms (like those used in massage), the friction and pressure on the skin helps to more deeply stimulate the layers of fascia. Because of this friction, myofascial release is a very slow, medium pressure treatment that focuses on allowing the body to relax and respond immediately - meaning it can give instant results.
Improve Range of Motion
Because myofascial release helps to rehydrate the fascia and surrounding tissue, this means the fascia has more ability to glide and move freely - without feeling stiff or stuck. This means an increase in range of motion and freedom of movement. This can also help for comfort in movement for people who suffer with uncomfortable cellulite or lipoedema.
Decrease Pain
Fascia is something that as health professionals, we've only just started to really understand in the last 5 - 10 years. With this learning, we now know that fascia actually has more nerve receptors than muscles do. So helping to reduce discomfort and increase movement in the fascia can decrease your overall feeling of pain more than just treating muscles alone.
Scar Tissue & Injury Reocvery
Because scar tissue is essentially bulky adhesions of fascia, the stiffness and tightness you feel around scars or old injuries doesn't always have to be permanent. Myofascial release on scar tissue (both from soft tissue injury, or surgical incisions) can be softened and improved with myofascial release. Helping to decrease the feeling of tightness and pain.
